Why HOA Rights Checker exists
Over 75 million Americans live under a homeowners association — and most have never read the state law that governs what their HOA can and can’t do. We built this tool to fix that.
What we do
HOA Rights Checker turns dense state statutes into plain-English answers. Pick your state and your situation — fines, foreclosure, solar panels, records requests, fees, rentals — and we show you what the law actually says, the limits your HOA must respect, and the practical next steps you can take. Every answer cites the exact statute so you can verify it yourself.
The tool currently covers 50 states with reviewed data, out of 50 tracked, and we add more as each state’s statutes are reviewed and verified.
How we source our data
Everything on this site comes from primary sources: official state statutes, legislative session laws, and state government publications. We do not rely on forum posts, blogs, or secondhand summaries. Each state’s data is labeled with its review status:
- Verified — reviewed against the current statute text, with citations checked.
- Draft — drafted from statute but still awaiting final review; clearly flagged on the page.
- Coming soon — not yet published.
Laws change. State legislatures amend HOA statutes nearly every session, so we re-review published states on a rolling basis and mark each page with the year it was last updated.
What we are not
We are not a law firm, and nothing on this site is legal advice. This is general legal information — a starting point that helps you understand your rights and ask better questions. For a dispute that affects your money or your home, talk to a licensed attorney in your state. You can read the full details on our disclaimer page.
